ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION ON EDUCATION WITH MRS. BUSH

 

The Chief Executive, Children’s Resources International Pakistan (Guarantee) Limited, Ms. Mehnaz Aziz, met with US First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush on March 4 2006 and participated in a roundtable discussion on the state of education in Pakistan with representatives from UNESCO, the FDE, USAID and CRI. Mrs. Mehnaz Aziz, Chief Executive CRI in her presentation updated the first lady about the work of CRI and its results. She informed Mrs. Bush that more than 25,000 children are being educated through interactive teaching and learning methods in over 110 schools. The number of schools and beneficiary children would increase manifold in the next three years with the expansion of the program. She said the methods were benefiting school children as the class atmosphere and teaching methods were designed to attract children and increase their confidence.

Mrs. Mehnaz also briefed Mrs. Laura Bush about the Family Literacy program which was aimed at teaching basic literacy and math skills to non literate parents of partner school children. She informed the distinguished guests that more than 3,000 parents have benefited from the program. Under program expansion more than 5,000 parents would benefit from literacy sessions in the next three years. Mrs. Mehnaz Aziz said that that the aim off CRI's Interactive teaching and learning program was to link youth with the global reality through advanced educational means.

Brig (R ) Maqsud-ul Hassan, Director General Federal Directorate of Education during the roundtable discussion said that the government was successfully using  "interactive child-centered methodology"  through the CRI in its 35 schools in Islamabad Capital Territory which will increase to more than 300 in the next three years. Regional Director-General, UNESCO, Mr. Jorge Sequeira briefing Mrs. Bush said in Pakistan there was a need to over come educational disparity as the ratio of child literacy was 58% while focus was being laid on ensuring that all the boys and girls complete primary education by 2015.

Mrs. Laura Bush during the roundtable discussion stressed the importance of teacher training in updating the quality of education in Pakistan. She emphasized on the direct involvement of parents and teachers in educational activities of a child. She said, “Children need parents and teachers to help them prepare for success in school and in life. Once in classrooms our children deserve excellent teachers and high quality education." Mrs. Bush later visited a classroom of the CRI to watch school children's performances.
